The ultimate projector guide for projector mapping 2026

Everything that matters when choosing a projector for projection mapping: brightness, throw ratio, resolution, light source, inputs and the features mapping makes irrelevant.

Projector spec sheets are written for home cinema buyers, so they emphasise the wrong things for mapping. This guide goes through the specifications in the order they actually matter when the projector's job is to light objects rather than fill a screen.

1. Brightness, honestly measured

Brightness is the spec you feel every time you use the projector, and the one manufacturers inflate hardest. The only comparable figure is ANSI lumens (or the newer ISO lumens, roughly equivalent). Marketing "lumens" and "LED lumens" overstate by 5 to 10 times.

As working numbers: 300 ANSI covers small objects in darkness, 500 to 1000 covers a wall in a dim room, 2000+ survives a living room with lights on low. Darkness is free brightness; every step darker roughly doubles perceived contrast.

2. Throw ratio

Throw ratio is image width per metre of distance. A standard-throw projector (ratio around 1.2 to 1.5) needs 2.5 to 3 metres to paint a 2-metre-wide image. A short-throw (0.5 to 0.8) does it from about a metre, which suits small rooms and mapping close objects.

For mapping, remember the projector should usually sit off-axis to the object, and off-axis eats into usable image area. Buy more coverage than the head-on calculation suggests.

3. Resolution

  • 1080p native is the sweet spot. Enough pixel density for crisp mapped edges on anything room-sized.
  • 720p native is acceptable for boxes and props, and common under $150.
  • 4K adds nothing visible at mapping distances and diverts budget from brightness. Skip it.

4. Light source

  • LED: 20,000+ hour life, quiet, compact, cool. The default at the budget end. Brightness tops out around 1000 real ANSI.
  • Lamp: the cheapest route to serious brightness, especially secondhand. Lamps dim over 3,000 to 6,000 hours and replacements cost real money.
  • Laser: bright, instant-on and long-lived, at a premium. Worth it for permanent installations more than for experiments.

5. Inputs and connectivity

  • HDMI is non-negotiable; it is the wired path from a phone via a USB-C adapter, with effectively zero latency.
  • Android TV / Google TV built in lets the projector run a wireless receiver app such as Lazy Lighting Link, so no dongle or cable is needed.
  • AirPlay, Chromecast and Miracast support varies by model; any of them enables wireless mirroring from the phone with a little added latency.

What mapping makes irrelevant

  • Keystone correction. Mapping software does per-corner geometry with more precision than any keystone feature, so this spec can be ignored entirely.
  • Zoom and lens shift. Convenient, but corner pinning absorbs placement compromises for free.
  • Built-in "cinema" colour modes. Mapped content is graphic and high-contrast; accuracy tuning matters little.

Practicalities that outrank specs

  • Fan noise sits in the room with you. Under 30 dB is comfortable; check reviews, not the spec sheet.
  • A tripod thread on the projector body makes off-axis rigging vastly easier.
  • Heat: give lamp projectors ventilation room, especially rigged close to walls or fabric.
