Resolume — the industry default
Resolume Avenue is what most working VJs learn first and many never leave: a clip grid, layers with blend modes, effect chains, solid BPM sync and rock-solid output. Arena, the bigger edition, adds projection mapping, edge blending and DMX for shows where the visuals meet physical staging.
Its strength is being an instrument. Everything is playable live, mappable to MIDI controllers, and predictable under pressure. macOS and Windows, paid licence per edition.
MadMapper — when the stage is a surface
MadMapper approaches the same gig from the mapping side. Where Resolume treats mapping as an output feature, MadMapper treats performance as something you do on top of precisely mapped surfaces — architecture, stage sets, LED fixtures. VDMX and TouchDesigner — the deep ends
